Hot Under Pressure: 5 Fun Facts with Louisa Edwards

January 14th, 2013 | 26 comments »

Winner, winner…Lori Thomas!!!

Contemporary romance writer Louisa Edwards, a former New York editor turned best-selling author, is no stranger to the culinary world. So what better way to use her experiences than writing delicious romances featuring, in her own words, “smokin’ hot chefs, smart and independent women, and original recipes?”

You go, Louisa! I’m so proud to be at St. Martin’s Press with you!

This week on my blog, she’s sharing some fun facts about the third book in her Rising Star Chef novels, HOT UNDER PRESSURE. As a Navy wife, I have a special fondness for this one because the hero was in the US Navy, on a submarine, no less. If you’ve ever been able to tour a sub, you realize just how heroic those submariners are.

Share your favorite foods to cook or eat in the comments and win a copy of Louisa’s books as well as a copy of my very own DUKES TO THE LEFT OF ME, PRINCES TO THE RIGHT. Oh, and hooray for books with purple covers! Have a great week, everyone!!!

Rising Star Chef Novel
Book #3
St. Martin’s Paperback
March 27, 2012

Loaded with the hottest dishes and sexiest chefs, the Rising Star Chef competition is about to boil over for one pair of all-star cooks who can’t stand the heat—of working so close together…

SHE’S THE ONE HE LEFT BEHIND

Henry Beck thought he’d already faced the toughest kitchen challenge of his life. After all, what could top sweating it out as a Navy cook on a submarine? But when he learns his competition for the title of Rising Star Chef is the sweet hippie girl he married…and left…ten years ago, the heat is on.

HE’S THE ONE SHE CAN’T FORGET

Now Beck and Skye Gladwell are going head to head in the finals…and sparking up old flames every time they touch. But Skye wants more than a win over the man who abandoned her when she needed him most—she wants a divorce! Then her sexy almost-ex makes a deliciously dangerous proposition. He’ll give in to her demands, but if his team wins the RSC, he has a demand of his own…one last taste of the only woman he ever loved.

5 Fun Facts about HOT UNDER PRESSURE:

1.) Skye Gladwell is my first “full-figured” heroine. Can’t believe it took me so long!

2.) I had live research on tap for my hero, Beck, and his past as a U.S. Navy submariner–my brother-in-law, Jeff, serves on a submarine.

3.) All three recipes in the back of the book were developed and tested by me and my trusty kitchen assistants. (Thanks for the paella, Daddy!)

4.) The inspiration for my Rising Star Chef competition trilogy was my obsessive love of Top Chef, Iron Chef, and Hell’s Kitchen.

5.) In my original proposal, the hero and heroine were named Seth and Laurel, the title of the book was LUSCIOUS…but they still had to face off in the finals of the cooking competition!

    Hi, Louisa!

I grew up in in Hampton, Virginia so I am quite familiar with the large navy community in Norfolk and surrounding communities. I was what I call a NASA brat because my Mom, aunt, husband and I all worked for NASA. Were you a Navy brat? ;-)

I’m glad you like all of those wonderful cooking shows. I love to cook and I find that I get so many ideas of how to change my own favorite recipes around and end up with something new.

Congratulations on finding your niche in life and on all of your great writing successes.

I’m looking forward to reading “Hot Under Pressure.” In addition, don’t you just love Kieran? She’s a love and a fabulous author. Winning a copy of her “Duke to the Left of Me, Princes to the Right” would be amazing as well.

    All the best!!

    Connie

Love the interview… LOoking forward to Hot under Pressure… I enjoyed Duke to the Left of Me….a lot!

  3. Louisa Edwards

Hi Connie! I wasn’t a Navy brat, but I got a lot of inspiration and research tidbits from my brother-in-law’s submarine adventures. :) And yes, I definitely heart Miss Kieran. She once ran out of a big publisher book signing to find me a Sharpie, because I’d forgotten mine. She’s a doll!

May – Thanks for stopping by! The interview was fun to do. Good luck in the drawing.

  4. Janice Hougland

I’m so glad you decided on a full-figured heroine! I fit into that category and it gets lonesome sometimes. :-) And I adore that you have recipes in the backs of your books! I love to cook and try new things…ode to a full-figured cook . . . haha

  5. Sharlene

I wouldn’t say any foods are my favorite to cook – I don’t love cooking! My favorites to eat would be lasagna & cheesecake. Not that I eat them all that much – fattening! Thanks for the interview!

  6. Louisa Edwards

Janice – LOL! Well, I’ve had an athletic chef heroine before, but I figured, realistically, I had to have one who clearly loves to cook and eat! Like me. You’re not alone! If you try any of my recipes, I hope you enjoy them. They were a lot of fun to develop (and test…)

Sharlene – Lasagna is complicated to cook! At least, it seems that way to me. Maybe start smaller and simpler. Loving to eat is the way most people learn to love cooking, so who knows? ; )

  7. Danielle Gorman

Thanks for the great interview and sharing your five facts. Looking forward to reading this one.

  8. bn100

    Nice cover and fun facts.

  9. Kieran

Hey, Louisa! It’s so great to have you here!! I was thrilled to getcha that Sharpie, LOL!! And you’re sweet to remember.

    :>)

I’m also thrilled you have a full-figured heroine. Any woman can be sexy if she FEELS sexy, right, ladies? And brains and heart have nothing to do with the size of our thighs!!

  10. erinf1

thanks for the great interview and congrats ladies on your releases!

  11. Diane Sallans

I love a lot of foods to eat, but when it comes to cooking I usually stay pretty basic like chicken, roasted asparagus, steamed brussell sprouts (fresh off the stalk), roasted white & sweet potatoes.

I’ve been on a few WWII subs that are docked for tourists – can’t imagine living on one of those.

Love the idea of Louisa featuring a ‘full figured woman’!

  12. Ada H

I have a huge fondness for crepes of any kind. I love trying out different toppings on them although I can eat them plain too.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  13. Sue Galuska

I was not in the Navy, but my father-in-law was. On vacations I always like to add some historical sightseeing and this past summer we were in Charleston, SC where we toured the USS Yorktown and the USS Laffey.

As for what I liked to cook….favorite is probably anything Italian. I love to make my homemade sauce that takes all day to cook.

    Congrats on the newest book!

  14. Maureen

I do like cooking competitions so it makes it even better to add a romance.

  15. Joanne B

Thanks for the great interview. Enjoyed your five fun facts. I love Paella! Can’t wait to read Hot Under Pressure.

  16. June M.

I love second chance stories…..and I love that more authors are writing heroines that are more normal sized.

  17. Shar Cardona

Looks like a great story! my favorite thing to cook is called Creamy Herb Chicken… the sauce on the chicken is to die for!

  18. alisha woods

what a lovely cover. Love to make enchiladas for the family they love them

  19. Josette Schaber

I love to cook. My mom was always a huge baker. So, I make a variety of things. My families favorite is a soup I make, it’s based on the sausage and potato soup made at the Olive Garden restaurant! My family tells me that mine is better LOL

Thanks for the interview Louisa, and thank you Kieran for providing it. I’ve not read any of your books Louisa but they sound wonderful and I’m very much looking forward to doing so. BN.com, here I come! I too love the cooking shows like Iron Chef, Chopped, etc and can easily see how you can fit that into a romance. Should be an exciting and enticing read. I love to cook (hate the clean up) and am always on a lookout for a new recipe. My favorites are Chicken Valencia, adapted from a Colonial Williamsburg recipe and Beef Wellington. Of course beef wellington has to be served on the anniversary of waterloo, and it is always followed with Napoleon’s for dessert. What can I say, my hubby has a weird sense of humor. He wants to make smurf and turf. Take giant prawns and use blue food color and use the little things that look like chefs hats. One of these days I’ll let him!
Anyway, thank you for bringing us new authors! Very much looking forward to the books.

  21. NicoleLaverdure

I just the excerpt and laugh when I read this “You can’t do any of that right now, dickhead. So focus. Get your head out of your ass and move. Go. Go!” So funny! I don’t usually read contemporary romance but sometimes I try one. Your book “Hot under pressure” seems very tempting to read. Funny, at home, DH is the cook, it’s his passion! So much fun! Thanks for this nice giveaway! Have a nice day!

Like you i am a huge fan of iron cheif america , choped, top cheif and i liked iron cheif redemption till this years fanaley yet i know i will still be watching next years show as well. My favorite dish used to be an asian grill salmon that i learn from foodnetwork . Easy and so yummy. Yet back in the spring i went to Nj with my mother and daughter she had graduated the 6 th grade and we took her to Nyc and toured . We stayed with our taunta Mia who is 83 and one of the last of the orriginal emmagrents in our family that is still alive . It was so neat for my daughter to not only visit NYC but an ancestor who could tell her her heratige . Any way while there Taunta Mia taught me how to make true authentic Rolaiden since then it has become atradition that 1 sunday of each month I make it and its a night the whole family looks forward to . If you want the recipe just let me know I’ll be glad to share. Its a thin cut stake you pound tender salt pepper, apply a thin layer off spicey mustard, add diced onion and bacon strip then role up into a roll shape tie with a string to hold shape then cook like you would a pot roast with beef broth till done takes about an hr . Remove your rolaidens and make a rhue to thikin the left over broth and driping into a gravey . My son says the gravey is so sinfuly good just give him a bowel and straw ..lol. I like to serve it with a sweet and sour red cabbage , potatoes, dinner rolls . Last sunday i was fealing frogey and made a home made appel pie. My husband accused me of abusing him cause he over ate. Just because it was good did not mean he had to eat 4 plates .. I refuse to be held liable ! Lol men!

  24. Amanda Martin

I am not much of a cook but I love to bake. My favorite’s are a my Salted Caramel Cheesecake, a Chocolate Cameral Turtle Cake (Messy but one of the best cakes I make), and Chocolate Chip Cookies which my husbands friends are convinced contain some dug in them (It’s my secret ingredient and I’ll never share)!

  25. Lori Thomas

I love to cook tex mex food; being from Texas helps that. Chicken enchiladas are one of my favorites to cook. It is simple to cook.
